A journey through the best British contemporary dance

From January 30th, 2016 Balletto di Roma is back with its BRITISH DANCE programme, a series of intensive study events with the representatives of the new British choreography and style techniques. The event, already extraordinary in its two first editions for having promoted the encounter with the repertoire of the best British contemporary choreography, this year is enriched by the presence of new guests belonging to the international scene and it doubles its educational offer by hosting two teachers for each day of the programme as well as an hour-long talk with each of the protagonists.

It is with great pleasure that I introduce the third edition of BRITISH DANCE, what is quickly becoming a leading event for many young Italian artists. One of the many features of this series of events is its innovative nature in promoting, both gradually and consistently, an access point to many diverse contemporary languages. In an important transitional moment of the European dance’s history, spreading such languages throughout the Italian territory becomes complementary to the development of this art form. The BRITISH DANCE series of events, besides concretely providing the practical instruments to the participating artists, will also allow them to think about and foster the current cultural debate on the nature and relevancy of dance as an artistic expression and practice. From this year, in order to expound upon this subject, I introduced an actual debate session with the guest artists, who will be able to share their artistic path in a talk open to all. Everyone will be able to actively participate by asking questions and further analysing the theoretical elements introduced by each practice. I personally believe that one of the most important aspects for the development of each artist consists in the exposure not only to what is considered traditional, but also, and more importantly, to what is new and different. BRITISH DANCE was created with the aim to nurture such values. Good luck with your work and your research, Paolo Mangiola

Programme

Following the past editions’ experiences, Akram Khan, one of the most sought-after and esteemed British choreographers of the international scene, will be back in January with his repertoire classes. Teacher of such classes will be the dancer Nicola Monaco, main interpreter of the most recent productions of the Akram Khan Company. During the same weekend, Jorge Crecis will teach the contemporary technique classes; Jorge trained at the Royal Conservatory in Madrid and later became a professional dancer for many European companies. Between 2008 and 2012 he worked at the London Contemporary Dance School (The Place) and was the guest teacher for institutions such as the Beijing Dance Academy (China), Conservatorio Superior de Madrid (Spain) and Roger Williams University (US). Jorge regularly works for companies such as the Akram Khan Company, DV8, Punchdrunk, Rambert, etc. BRITISH DANCE will also welcome in February one of the dancers of the Wayne McGregor Random Dance company, which is led by the innovative and avant-garde artist Wayne McGregor. James Pett, an extremely experienced artist as well as extraordinary performer, will be the guest teacher. During the same weekend, BRITISH DANCE will also welcome for the first time Ellen van Schuylenburch, teacher at London’s Laban and memorable performer with Michael Clark. Ellen will present her own experience and expertise in the Cunningham technique, which she researched in New York during the ‘70s and ‘80s. Lauren Potter will be back for the last BRITISH DANCE event in March. Lauren is one of the spokespersons of the ‘80s British scene as well as a teacher of release technique, a style that combines the awareness of the weight of the body with the fluency of the motions in the space through a specific use of the moving articulations and muscles. Finally, during such weekend, for the first time at Balletto di Roma, BRITISH DANCE will feature Hannes Langolf, associated performer of the DV8 Physical Theatre company, led by Lloyd Newson. During the workshop, there will be an introduction to the work methods that revolve around the relationship between meaning and movement and the participants will work towards a better comprehension of the creative process of DV8, a company that is known for having pushed the boundaries of dance for more than 30 years. The performers will be pushed to face their physical routines and to develop a strong sensitivity towards both the detail and the authenticity in choreography and words.

Goals

Being strictly distinctive of foreign contexts, the composition and educational style of the protagonists of the British scene is nowadays still closed off to Italian dancers; this makes BRITISH DANCE an innovative and instructive event. It could also be a beneficial opportunity for the students that are becoming professionals to learn the most suitable instruments in order to tackle future castings abroad.

Who can participate?

BRITISH DANCE is open to all professional dancers from the age of 18 onwards and students from 15 onwards who have attended, for at least two years, advanced contemporary dance classes. The third weekend with DV8 Physical Theater (Hannes Langolf) and RELEASE TECHNIQUE (Lauren Potter) is open only to dancers of 18 years of age onwards. We remind you that the classes will be held in English. It is therefore required a basic knowledge of the language in order to follow the teachers’ directions.
